General Information

I am currently Professor of Atmospheric Physics and Technology at the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) in Greece. I received my BSc in Physics in 1987 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and my PhD in 1991 from the same University while holding a PhD scholarship at the Max-Planck Institute (MPI) for Aeronomy in Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany, with a thesis on tropospheric photooxidants in urban and remote locations.

After my PhD I worked in MPI for Aeronomy for two years analyzing stratospheric air samples for naturally occurring organohalogens. After that, I worked in the Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics of AUTH for seven years on air quality and tropospheric chemistry-aerosol-UV interrelationships before moving to my current position in 2003. My current research interests include aerosol-cloud interactions, atmospheric electricity, atmospheric trace species, and urban climate. I am author of more than 60 publications in ISI-indexed journals and I have participated in numerous land and sea-going expeditions.

I have served in several national and international boards and Committees including being for several years National Delegate in European Space Agency’s Programme Board for Earth Observation as well as in the Data Operations Scientific and Technical Advisory Group. I have coordinated the realization of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Newsletter and have been its Managing Editor 2002-2011. I have coordinated the IMAGGEO geoscience images database of EGU being its managing administrator since 2007.
